Tools for Maintaining Your Pet at Home!

Slicker Brush

A slicker brush is used to remove tangles, burrs, or any other foreign materials in your pups coat. Do not use too much pressure as the pins can scratch the skin.

Steel Comb

A steel comb is used after a slicker brush to ensure all the tangles are removed. Do not use a steel comb before using a slicker brush. The comb should easily glide through the coat and gently touch the skin if the coat is properly brushed through.

Flea Comb

Pet Blow Dryer

Flea combs are great for removing built up eye discharge/tear stains. These can also be used to remove burrs, stickers, pests, and any other foreign material in your dog’s coat.

Pet Blow Dryer

Pet Blow Dryer

A dryer is the perfect tool for people with long-haired dogs. Using the dryer on the LOW setting with NO nozzle will help you see the mats in your dog’s coat easily! Run the dryer over the entire coat to check for the “problem” areas that need the most brushing! This way, you get the important sections done before your dog loses patience. If you have a DOODLE, drying them when they get wet is very important to prevent matting!

Brushing & Detangling Spray

Botaniqa Avocado Detangling Spray is what I recommend for brushing your pup, even if they don’t have any mats! Using a spray to slightly dampen the coat helps prevent static friction. The static can cause more mats and attract more dander and dirt. If there is a tangle or mat that can be brushed, saturate the area with the Botaniqa spray and use your slicker brush followed by the steel comb.

Cornstarch or Baby Powder

These powders can be used to get the extra stubborn sticker burrs out of your dog‘s coat. Coat your fingers or sprinkle some powder on the burr and gently work it out of the coat. If needed, use your slicker brush or comb!

Where to Start Brushing

THE RED ZONE! This area mats up the quickest and easiest. Make sure to hit these spots a couple times a week! Use your slicker brush followed by your steel comb.
THE YELLOW ZONE! This area is still prone to matting but not quite as bad as the red zone. Make sure to hit these spots weekly!
THE GREEN ZONE! This area doesn’t mat up as easily but  can if your dog likes to roll around! Doggy doors can sometimes cause hair follicle “damage”, causing the fur along the back to change texture, darken in color, and/or mat easier.
~
HELPFUL TIP! Before just blindly brushing at your dog’s coat, use a blow dryer on the low setting to check for “problem areas” in the red zone! Take the nozzle off of the hose and hold it 6-12 inches away from the coat (holding the hose too close to the coat will cause it to tangle.) Feeling the coat with just your hands can be deceiving. Sometimes you won’t feel the mat under the top layer of the coat, so the dryer helps you see all the way down to the skin. When you find a mat or tangle, turn off the dryer and liberally apply the Botaniqa tangle-free spray before using your slicker brush to work it out.
